If you love french fries, then you really need to buy a french fry cutter. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place because today I’m going to review and discuss several popular brands so that you can quickly and easily find the cutter that’s right for you and fits your budget.
What is a french fry cutter?
Very simply, it’s a handy kitchen gadget that lets you cut potatoes quickly and easily into french fry shapes of different lengths. They come in a variety of different prices depending on the different bells and whistles that you may or may not want them to have.
You can find incredibly inexpensive manual models for $10 and prices range from there up to $50 or more. Of course, you can also find industrial-strength models for several hundred dollars that a restaurant might use, so there is really quite a range depending on your exact needs.
Popular cutters include Cuisinart, Progressive International, Pragotrade, Select Brands, Norpro, and others. Today I’m going to discuss three different models that should give you a pretty good idea of what’s out there and what you can expect to pay. I’m going to look at:
- Progressive International Vegetable/French Fry Cutter
- Cuisinart French Fry Cutter
- Norpro French Fry Cutter
Progressive International Vegetable/French Fry Cutter
At $11 this may be the most popular french fry gadget on the market today. All you do is place a small potato into the “shoot” and squeeze. That’s it! It comes with two blades; a 25-hole for larger fries and 49-hole for smaller ones. The gadget itself is mostly plastic with some stainless steel, so you’ll have to hand wash it. Based on 144 customer reviews I give this a solid 90% A- rating.
Cuisinart French Fry Cutter
At $20 this looks like a nice potato cutter to choose, and you can hardly ever go wrong with Cuisinart but upon closer inspection it may not be such a great model after all. Like the progressive model, it has two blades, one for thick and one for thin french fries. It also has a suction cup base so that it won’t slide around on the counter; and this model is dishwasher safe. Unfortunately, based on nine customer ratings, I’ve got to give this one a 63% F, or 1 out of 5 stars.
Norpro French Fry Cutter
Finally at about $50, this is an impressive looking french fry potato cutter. It is stainless steel throughout with a solid black rubber handle that looks and feels very solid. This little guy makes professional french fries every time. You will need to hand wash it though. It also has a suction base so it won’t slide around on your counter. This is really a commercial cutter, and should make an industrial french fry. I give it a solid 90% A-
A French Fry Cutter is a great piece of cookware that no home chef should be without. They aren’t just kitchen gadgets, but are really an essential cooking tool (especially if fries are your kids’ favorite food!). Based on these three reviews, I suggest the Progressive International as my product of choice.
