How to Get Started in Internet Marketing

Internet Marketing is great. You can work from home, be your own boss, do interesting and exciting things, and make a boat load of money.

But how to get started?

Well, that’s the tricky part. Internet Marketing is specific, meaning you must have a specific set of skills to succeed. It’s not necessarily hard it’s just specific.

I mean, you can’t just throw up some crappy web site and hope to make money. There’s a way to do things correctly.

We’ll get into my exact methods for making money in future articles. For right now, I just want to ground you in the basics; give you a loose idea of what you can expect.

First – you must learn Internet Marketing

Ok, obviously you’re here, so you’ve already taken a step down this path. I want to throw this one out right away. Internet Marketing is 95% intellectual. You learn a technique, you use it, you make money. Eventually the market changes and your technique doesn’t work any more (or starts to work much less).

So you learn a new technique. The more experienced you get, the less you will rely on others for help along the way. You’ll come up with your own ideas and techniques for making money. You’ll test and it’s a lot of fun.

Until you get that far, you’re going to be spending a large chunk of time reading. You’ll read what others are doing, you’ll read internet marketing newsletters and blogs, and message boards too. You’ll get books, home study courses, maybe go to a yearly conference or two…. there’s just no way around this.

Internet marketing is 95% intellectual. If you don’t like to learn, you won’t get ahead.

I suggest you go to Google and sign up for a free Google account. Then activate Google Reader. It’s a free RSS feed aggregator. See that orange link on the left side of this web site that says Subscribe to our RSS you click on that to subscribe to this blog in your Google Reader.

Whenever you find an Internet Marketing or SEO blog, subscribe to their RSS feed. Then, whenever they make a new post, your Google Reader updates automatically. You can subscribe to a hundred marketing blogs in your Google Reader and read them all from one screen (the Google Reader Screen).

This makes learning much easier. And it’s free.

To get you started, I suggest you subscribe to this web site, and my good friend John Elder’s blog about SEO (search engine optimization) called seoFool.com Because getting your web site ranked well at the major search engines is essential and John Elder is one of the best SEO guys I’ve ever worked with. Plus it’s free and he updates at least once or twice every day. You’ll learn SEO inside out from him for free.

Spend several days just searching the Internet for other marketing related blogs and web sites. Chances are they all have RSS subscription methods that let you subscribe via your free Google Reader account.

Then get in the habit each day of logging into your Google account to read blog posts. You might designate a time of the day to do this sort of thing, like early in the morning or late at night. Or you might grab snatches here and there throughout the day when you don’t have anything else to do.

I suggest you create a specific TIME of the day to read and learn. Sometime quiet like early in the morning or later at night. Make it a part of your routine and give yourself plenty of time to think about the things you read so that you really understand them.

Because Internet Marketing is 95% intellectual…

In my next article I’ll get into the other skills you’ll need to develop to make a ton of money online with Internet Marketing.
