I needed a ninja turtle cake pan to make my little guy a special cake for his birthday but I had a really hard time tracking one down, and in the end I probably spent more money than if I had just went out and bought a custom cake at the store. But still, it was worth it!

I really had to do a lot of research to find one, and in the end I found out that Wilton is really just about the only cake pan company that still makes them.

I guess the teenage mutant ninja turtles were more popular about a decade ago than they are now, so they just don’t produce as many ninja turtle cake pans as they might have once done. In fact, I think they may have discontinued them completely!

Thank goodness for the Internet! I was able to track some down. The prices were from $15 all the way up to around $40 depending on the size of the cake pan. This may not be a very good investment if you only have one child, but if you’ve got a handful of them like I do, and they all love the teenage mutant ninja turtles, then it’s really a no brainer.

Plus, when you’re done with them (once your kids have grown) I imagine that you can turn around and sell them on eBay. They are almost like collectable items!

The tricky thing about them is picking out the best one. They come in lots of different shapes and sizes. After all, there were FOUR ninja turtles and they all have different weapons and poses and things like that. If your kid has a favorite (my son’s favorite was Leonardo) then definitely try to find that one.

You can tell which character is which based on the weapon they are holding (and you can be sure that the cake pan will make prominent use of that weapon!). For instance, here are the specific turtles weapons:

  • Leonardo: two katana swords, wears blue
  • Michelangelo: nunchucks, wears orange
  • Donatello: bo staff, wears purple
  • Raphael: two sai (small daggers), wears red

I also went ahead and listed their colors above too so that you know which colors to use when icing them. The frosting is very important. In fact, what I ended up doing was buying a generic cake pan that could have been either of the four turtles (it didn’t show any distinguishing marks like their weapons). That way I can bake several cakes and then use different colored icing for each one. That was rather ingenious I thought.

In the end, finding my Ninja Turtle Cake Pan was a lot of fun and it was even more fun to make my turtle cakes. The kids absolutely loved them and that’s really all that matters in my book. You may have to search around online at sites like eBay to find them, but it’s definitely worth the effort.
