Cutting boards are an essential part of every kitchen and everybody has their own favorites from bamboo cutting boards to wooden cutting boards and even butcher block countertops; but when it comes down to price, maintenance, and ease-of-use you just can’t go wrong with plastic cutting boards and that’s what I would like to talk about in this article today.

What type of board you cut on when you are cooking in the kitchen will depend on several different things. Back in the old days acrylic plastic boards weren’t as sophisticated as they are today and could actually dull your knives if you weren’t careful. That really isn’t the case these days as the technology to create non slip (frosted acrylic) boards has become better, and knife technology has become better as well, this isn’t really a concern anymore. Acrylic cutting is a dream come true for many amateur chefs!

The great thing about an acrylic cutting board is that you don’t have to do anything to maintain it. You can wash it with hot soap and water or simply stick it in your dishwasher if it will fit (and most 15 X 15 or 11×14 boards will). With wooden cutting boards you have to seal them with mineral oil that must be applied usually once a week for the first month or two and then every month thereafter. Talk about a headache!

Plastic cutting boards are often easier to use as well; especially a cutting board that is non slip like the architec gripper or other similar brands that have high customer reviews. It just makes your entire kitchen & dining experience so much easier when you don’t have to worry about your cutting board sliding around all over the place.

Another great thing about plastic boards is their style since they come in many different colors to fit the specific decor of your kitchen. Other options include acrylic plastic (frosted acrylic) and acrylic clear as well as multi-sheet options. Most plastic cutting boards are reversible which is a handy feature to have. My personal favorites are the 15 x 15 acrylic plastic models as I find this size to be just right for my needs; but really there are an infinite number of size options to fit whatever space you have.

Finally, one of the best things about acrylic boards is the price. Plastic cutting boards sell for as low as five dollars up to $20. That’s generally the range you can expect to find and within that price range you can find whatever size and color you need. Compare this to wooden cutting boards that can cost $50 or several hundred dollars depending on the wood grain and you quickly discover why so many people rave about plastic cutting boards!

At the end of the day, you need a board that you are comfortable with and since plastic is so cheap, many people purchase three or four or more of various sizes that you can use for different circumstances making plastic cutting boards incredibly useful for just about every kitchen.
