When it comes to cheese graters, everyone has their own opinion and their own favorites, but when you come right down to it, most people still use a rotary cheese grater. Today I’m going to talk about them in a little bit of detail, and also discuss several different popular brands that you can choose from at different price ranges. When we’re done, hopefully you’ll have a better idea of the grater that’s right for you.
There are many different gadgets that any kitchen should have, but a solid rotary grater may be the most important. You can use it on different cheeses (hard cheese like parmesan cheese or soft) of course, but also on chocolate, and many other foods as well.
So what IS a rotary grater?
Basically it is just how it sounds…rotary, round. It’s a grater with a round cylinder that you put the cheese into. Then you either manually or automatically turn the cylinder which grates the cheese. That’s pretty much all there is to it. Of course automatic machines cost more money than a manual one but other than that, that’s really all there is to it.
Today I’m going to discuss three popular options, review them, talk about them in as much detail as I can, and give you an idea of the different price ranges as well as talk about customer reviews so you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into! I’m going to review the:
- Oxo Good Grips Seal and Store Rotary Grater
- Zyliss All Cheese Grater, Fine and Course Drum Set
- Cuisipro Rotary Cheese Grater
Oxo Good Grips Seal and Store Rotary Grater
At $15 this is a pretty solid little cheese grater, especially for the price. It has a pretty soft handle and rotating knob that are both pretty comfortable to hold and use. It has a silicone seal that closes the entire thing which is a little unusual but handy. It also has a cap that holds the grated cheese inside a chamber which is also a nice feature. It has a stainless steel grating cylinder and the whole thing is dishwasher safe. Some people have had issues with this model and based on 46 reviews I give it an 80% B- or 3 star out of 5 stars.
Zyliss All Cheese Grater, Fine and Course Drum Set
At $16 this zyliss cheese grater is another popular option that comes with two drums, one for fine grating and another for course. The drums themselves snap in and out of the white plastic case pretty easily which helps with cleaning, though the whole thing is dishwasher safe. It comes with a non-slip thumb rest and a drum like handle that folds for storage. For the price this is a pretty good model and out of 54 customer ratings I give it a solid 85% B.
Cuisipro Rotary Cheese Grater
At $24 this is a slightly more expensive model but it is stainless steel throughout the entire body. This makes it a little more heavy-duty which allows for manual grading of hard cheeses as well as nuts and chocolate. As I said, it’s made of 18/10 stainless steel and has a removable drum for easy cleaning. The whole thing is dishwasher safe even though it is made of steel, which is nice. Out of 18 reviews, I give this an 85% B.
So there you have three very solid Rotary Cheese Grater products to choose from. These pretty much represent what you can expect to find in just about any department store or online kitchenware website. The prices are also fairly indicative of what you can expect to find. If you do much cooking, you really can’t go wrong with any of them.
