Vietri Plates

There’s something elegant about vietri plates that’s hard to describe. It’s really just a feeling you get…a feeling of Italy, or Tuscany on a lazy summer afternoon that seeps into your bones just by looking at these beautiful pieces. Maybe that’s why they are some of the most popular dishes on the planet right now.

Where did they come from?

I find it incredibly amazing that Vietri dishes have only really been around since 1983 or so when a mother and two daughters went on vacation in Italy and fell in love with the dinnerware at their hotel! They met with the people who handcrafted the plates and decided to start importing it into United States. Just think, that was only 27 odd years ago. That’s no time at all in dinnerware age!

The words “instant success” rarely spring to mind very often in this world but in this case that’s exactly how I would describe Vietri. Almost as soon as they started, the world began clamoring for everything they could get their hands on and the acclaim hasn’t let up yet.

What can you expect, selection wise?

You have a pretty nice selection when it comes to the different plates that are available. Some are festive and bright in that orange Sunburst sort of way that’s unique to Italy, while others are subtle and elegant with simple white designs or cream off white.

Take for instance the Vietri Bianco Dinner Plate. It cost $36 and is a simple white plate with no design or etchings whatsoever. Like all dishes from this country, it is handmade out of terra-cotta from Tuscany. It has a clear glaze that looks like exposed terra-cotta just like the peasants used to make it back in the 1300s.

Compare that to the Vietri Lemon Freschi Plate that costs $35. This plate bursts with colors, beginning with a slim band around the outer edges that is deep dark yellow and borders and inner band of dark blue with bright green leaves interspersed throughout. The inside of the plate showcases four bright orange lemons nestled in green foliage surrounding an inner core of off-white. This plate screams Tuscany and will brighten up your day, every day, no matter what.

You get a wide range of options from formal and elegant all the way to downright crude and cartoonish, which is part of the charm that comes with Vietri. Whether you’re looking for salad plates, cereal bowls, dinner plates, a serving bowl or an oval platter, there’s something for everybody and I know you’ll enjoy your plates for years to come.

Why have Vietri Plates taken the world by storm? I’m not sure really. Are they a novelty that will wear off in a few years? I don’t really think so. When you hold one of these plates in your hand you can feel the craftsmanship that goes into each and every one that will make you feel like you’re a part of something with a deep abiding history that extends behind as well as into the future.
